Non-arab
Can you imagine being raped, burned, or beaten to death? The civilians of Darfur, Sudan can. Almost a million people have been killed in Darfur by the Janjaweed militia because they were non-Arab and a part of the rebel groups who stood up against the government. While the Janjaweed are doing what the government told them to do they are also killing people to torture and get rid of the non-Arab groups. Once they got the que to start the genocidal attacts in 2003 they destroyed over 400 villages belonging to the African Fur, Masalit, and Zaghawa ethnic groups, which are also the rebel groups, and forced millions of civilians to leave their homes.
Musa hilal
Musa Hilal is the leader of the Janjaweed militia. He was born in 1961 in Northern Darfur and his family lead the Um Jalul clan. He now lives in the capital of Sudan and has 3 wives and 13 children. He works for the government with the position of leading the Mahamid, an Arab tribe in Darfur. Hilal said that he accepted this position because he wanted to be "useful". " All my work depends on struggling hard to make peace in Darfur" Hilal said.
“They only cared about their own tribes– the Fur, Zaghawa, and Masaleit. They started to attack the Arab tribes,” - Musa Hilal
Hilal said that the reason the rebel groups attacked was because they only cared about themselves. He denied the fact that they were being neglected and living in poor conditions, so they persevered to get what they wanted. Hilal feels that the Arabs are superior to all of the non-Arab tribes in Darfur and what ever decision they make is for the best. “We have the majority in the field. We have the majority of the livestock. There can be no solution without us.” says Hilal. In 2004 Hilal sent out a memo to the Janjaweed commanders saying that his objective was to “change the demography of Darfur” and to “rid Darfur of all African tribes,” This shows that his intintions were not to make peace in Darfur, but to do an ethnic cleansing of all the rebel groups in Darfur.
when will this horrible genocide end?
Once the genocide prevailed in 2003 the Janjaweed started an ethnic cleansing of the non-Arab groups Darfur. The cruel deeds of the Janjaweed are not only the governments responsibility, but the Janjaweed are also responsible because they did more harm. While so many families are being raped, burned, and beaten to death in Darfur, you can do something to help. Hundreds of people are dying everyday in Darfur, and we only ask when will this horrible genocide end?
